In addition to distributing films, an important part of Circle's activities as in other women's organisations of that time - was to research early women filmmakers, that had not been written into film history, such as Alice Guy, Germaine Dulac and Maya Deren.
This research was then re-presented alongside contemporary
work, and film prints were acquired of previously unavailable
films, for distribution.
Lis read letters from Sandra to her, it was tremendous and so
moving. She not only described the intimate details of the world
around her, but also her pain, but in a really new way, how she
struggled for her work to be recognised by funding bodies, how
women are marginalised, her longing for a collective social
spirit, humanity, her sexual desire, all with incredible humour
and dignity, intelligence and charm.
