Using contemporary accounts of the privations suffered by the soldiers and sailors of the Spanish armada, the film focuses on their terrible suffering as they struggle to reach Spain and safety. Gruesome and detailed descriptions of sickness, treachery and murder challenge some of the cherished ideals upon which an English mythology has been formed. (WR)
