I have come to realize that my main interest is in creating experiences rather than concepts. Ideas emerge from sensation from colour, image, sound, movement and time.

Biographical details:

Born in Plymouth 1940. DipFA, Slade School of Art 1965. Practised and exhibited as a painter until 1969 and as a film-maker since 1965.

Chair of the London Film-makers' Co-op 1970-73; member of BFI Production Board 1971-75; Chair of the Arts Council's Artists' Film and Video Committee 1986-90.

Professor and Head of Harrow School of Design and Media University of Westminster 1990-1997; Professor and Head of Research at Central Saint Martin's College of Art London Institute.

His film works, installations and performances have been widely shown at museums, galleries and festivals nationally and internationally.

Screenings include Cannes (Quinzaine des Realisateurs); Pandaemonium, ICA, London; Berlin Film Festival and Oberhausen.

Group exhibitions include Une Histoire du Cinema, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Film as Film, Hayward Gallery, London; Documenta 6, Kassel and Shoot Shoot Shoot, Tate Modern, London.

His work is in the collection of the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the National Film Archive of Taiwan; the Canadian Distribution Centre, Montreal; among others.
