Y is based upon archival research, in the Imperial War Museum and in the Archives Departementales Touraine, on the Line of Demarcation between occupied and Vichy France, 1942-44, on collaboration during the German occupation of France, 1940-44; and conversations with two members of the Resistance who acted as passeurs and couriers during that period - 'She had two identity cards in the hotel that night. She showed the wrong one. Both were false. Being identified is both ritual and illusion.'
