Bagnena I-IV: Sparks of Pool

A place in the hills near Arezzo. Dried rose, spines and rocks, turquoise blue, sparks of pool, yellow petals. An ant hill of memories - a section of film.

"...I went away with some friends, to a place in the hills near Arezzo. Darryn had just diagnosed HIV+. A year on I was still having violent nightmares after being attacked. We helped one another. I filmed this film. Just watching. Some of it we filmed together. The camera is handed back and forth over threads of single frames. Dried rose, spines and rocks, turquoise water, sparks of pool, yellow petals. Jean-Marc's Mamiya camera. My face still hurt. There was this undercurrent. On 12th August I had a phone call that Manfred had died. I took the train home and flew to Berlin. In the Spring we went back to Bagnena. The mood was different. That was after the trial, after Gavin's and Martin's diagnosis. The hills were silent with snow. My world had changed. I cut this end section two years later. This world was still there. Immutable. You will only get part of this from this section of the film. My shadows on celluloid. Love A."

Super 8 blown up and stretch printed to 12fps on 16mm 7272 stock, with passages slowed to 2 and 3fps, courtesy of Kodak.
